Vowels

‘Vowels’ is a 2015 collection of illustration exploring the vowels in Danish. As a native English speaker, this body of work began as a way of exploring the Danish language visually as I muddled my way through learning a new language. While I worked on these illustrations I was interested in visually depicting words beginning with the different vowels in Danish, juxtaposing these with my own preconceived knowledge of vowels in English. As an English-only speaker there is something confusing, yet-special about placing a duck next to an ‘a’ or a unicorn with an ‘e’ which, in my mind, celebrates the uniqueness of culture and understanding. I hope that the final collection of works represents a childlike, playful approach to language learning which appeals to both new Danish-learners as well as children who are only first tackling literacy and language learning alike.
